Lightroom Photo & Video Editor Review – A Powerful Tool with Room to Grow

Overview

Adobe Lightroom remains a dominant force in the mobile photo editing landscape, boasting over 402 million installs and a robust 4.58-star rating from 3.23 million users. This free application offers a surprisingly deep toolkit for both photographers and casual users alike, aiming to transform everyday snapshots into shareable masterpieces. The app’s core functionality revolves around intelligent editing suggestions through “Quick Actions,” alongside traditional manual controls for fine-tuning images and videos. While the free version provides substantial capabilities, it's important to understand its limitations compared to the paid Lightroom subscription model. The focus here is on assessing whether Lightroom’s strengths outweigh its shortcomings in a competitive market.

Key Features

Lightroom’s feature set is broad, catering to a wide range of editing needs:

  • Quick Actions: This is arguably the app's most significant differentiator. Based on AI analysis, Quick Actions automatically suggest adjustments like “Pop,” “Warmth,” “Sharpen,” and “Vibrant” – often dramatically improving an image within seconds. For example, applying "Pop" to a portrait photo consistently brightens skin tones and adds a pleasing vibrancy.
  • Presets: Users can apply pre-designed editing styles (presets) created by Adobe or community members, allowing for rapid stylistic transformations. The sheer volume of available presets is considerable.
  • Detailed Editing Controls: Beyond Quick Actions, Lightroom offers granular control over exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, whites, blacks, clarity, texture, vibrance, and saturation. Users can adjust these sliders individually or use the curve editor for advanced tonal adjustments.
  • Selective Adjustments: The masking tool allows users to target specific areas of an image for localized editing – ideal for things like brightening a subject's face without affecting the background.
  • Video Editing: Lightroom now includes basic video editing capabilities, allowing users to trim footage, add music, and apply filters directly within the app. While not as robust as dedicated video editors, it provides convenient edits for social media content.
  • RAW Support: Lightroom supports RAW image formats, preserving maximum detail and color information captured by compatible cameras.
  • Cloud Syncing: Photos edited in Lightroom Mobile sync seamlessly to Adobe Creative Cloud’s desktop version of Lightroom, allowing users to continue their workflow across devices.

Strengths

  • Intuitive Quick Actions: The Quick Actions feature genuinely streamlines the editing process, particularly for less experienced users. It consistently produces visually appealing results with minimal effort. This is a major reason for the app's popularity.
  • Powerful Manual Controls: Despite the ease of use offered by Quick Actions, Lightroom doesn’t sacrifice depth. The manual controls are precisely tuned and offer exceptional control over image quality, catering to more experienced editors.
  • Cross-Platform Syncing: The seamless integration with Adobe Creative Cloud is a significant advantage for users who work across multiple devices. Editing on your phone and finishing on your desktop is remarkably fluid.
  • Excellent Color Grading Tools: Lightroom has consistently been praised for its color grading abilities, offering precise control over hue, saturation, and luminance adjustments.

Areas for Improvement

  • Preset Management: While the sheer number of presets is a strength, it also creates clutter. A more robust organizational system within presets – perhaps tagging or folders – would significantly improve usability.
  • Video Editing Limitations: The video editing features are currently quite basic. Advanced options like multi-track editing or color grading aren’t available, limiting its appeal for serious videographers.
  • Masking Tool Refinement: While the masking tool is effective, it could benefit from more precise control options and a smoother brush interface. Currently, achieving truly seamless selections can be challenging.
  • Performance on Older Devices: Some users have reported performance issues (lag) on older Android or iOS devices. Optimizations for lower-end hardware would improve the user experience.

User Experience

The Lightroom Mobile app benefits from a clean and modern interface. The layout is logically organized, with editing tools easily accessible through intuitive tabs. The Quick Actions are prominently displayed, encouraging experimentation. The learning curve is relatively gentle, thanks to the guided tutorials and helpful tooltips. However, mastering the more advanced features – particularly masking and curve adjustments – requires some practice. The app’s responsiveness is generally good, but as noted earlier, performance can degrade on older devices.

Value for Money

Lightroom is offered entirely free of charge, a significant draw for casual users. This access allows users to explore the full breadth of the app's capabilities before considering a subscription to Lightroom Creative Cloud, which unlocks advanced features like cloud storage, collaboration tools and more extensive video editing options. The value proposition is strongest for those who regularly edit photos or videos and find themselves needing the power and flexibility offered by Lightroom’s premium features.

Conclusion

Lightroom Photo & Video Editor remains one of the best photo editing apps available on mobile devices. Its intuitive Quick Actions, powerful manual controls, and seamless cross-platform syncing make it a compelling choice for photographers and casual users alike. While areas for improvement exist – particularly around video editing and preset management – the app’s strengths overwhelmingly outweigh its weaknesses. The free version offers substantial value, making it an excellent starting point for anyone looking to elevate their mobile photo editing game. Considering the high number of installs (402 million+), Adobe has clearly created a product that resonates with a massive audience, and for good reason.

the ease of doing quick edits of pics that you took on the phone without having to go through the transfer hassle to a PC is amazing. but not having every feature from the desktop application is the loss. it's a mobile app, but sometimes the ones that are missing is sometimes the most powerful tools we tend to look for and use regularly that exists in the desktop app

Honestly, this one of the best photo editing apps I've ever come across. Really taught me a lot on the technical stuff, and although there are some features that are only available via monthly payments (which is only about $5 per month and I'd gladly pay), it's still a really amazing app without them. A must for if you want to edit each specific parts of a photo better and wow anyone. It can also act as a stepping stone towards the CC desktop version, which is more complicated.

4/14/24 Edit... the frequent crashing seems to have subsided and things this far are much more stable. Had 5 stars but something changed recently (within past week) and the app constantly crashes, many times before you can even get a quick edit and save in. I'll probably cancel my premium that I just recently started as I can't even use the basic features. Hopefully it'll be fixed soon and back to 5 star quality.

This is my go to app for editing! I love the convenience of how simple the app is to navigate and the range of possibilities with editing that you can do. However, the new update has made the generative remove tool not work properly. I mainly photograph children, so there is always something to remove in the background of the pictures from me having to chase them around. Please try to get this fixed as soon as possible. Thank you!

Overall I really love this program. The functionality on mobile devices is pretty good. Comparable to the desktop program. My only complaint is that the remove or heal feature doesn't work great on larger items items (in relation to the whole photo). I've mostly used the mobile app so this is more focused on that, but I have had similar issues in the desktop app as well.
